Fathers and Daughters: A Lost Bond

This evening I overheard two girls talking, we'll call them Lori and Jenny. Jenny asked Lori where her dad was. Lori replied that he was playing softball and that he rarely came to watch her. "He doesn't like me," she said. Jenny chuckled and said, "Really?" And Lori just laughed and said that she didn't know.

Whether this conversation was in jest or not, I was made aware of the sad state that young girls are in today. There is no bond with fathers. They don't understand their father's role in their life. They regard him as nothing. When they were young (when they were princesses and Daddy was the shining knight) the best time of the day was when Daddy came home; at one time he was the hero of their life. What happened? While there could be fault on the father's side, I fear that there is more on the daughter's. Is she seeking her dad's opinion? Does she understand that she is under his authority until she is married? Does she see the importance that Dad plays throughout her life? No.

"Lord, lead these girls to their fathers. Show them that he is one of the most important people in their lives. Open their hearts to their father's counsel and help them to see him as their friend, not their enemy. Reveal to them the 'chain of command.' Show them how important it is for them to respect, honor and obey their fathers. Thank you for my own father. And thank you for being my heavenly father. Thank you, Lord, for your grace in my life. In Christ Alone, Amen."
