A Poem, Inspired by Vermeer's The Milkmaid.
She thinks of riches
And sweet treats to eat.
Silk gowns she imagines,
And all things elite.
She imagines great balls,
So grand and magnificent;
She would be dessed in jewels,
Right down to her feet.
Instead of a straw mat,
Upon a dirt floor,
She envisions a bed,
Where she'd never get sore.
She would be known,
For miles around,
As the prettiest maid,
One with a crown!
She dreams of suitors,
Begging for her hand.
And milky white skin
Instead of hers, so tanned.
On quests they would go,
To win her affection.
To them, she's known
As the soul of perfection.
Oh! Fair Maiden,
Want not these things!
Their beauty is temorary,
On them you cannot cling.
When trials afflict you
And all you see is darkness,
Will a thousand rubies
Keep you from distress?
Sweet, frivolous maiden,
You know it is true.
So believe in the One
Who will never forsake you.
Find your pleasure in the One,
Whose love is eternal,
He will never let you down,
Like these things, external.
